In the 1950s a ground-breaking study by Mahfouz and Dakhany identified many of the constituents of Black Seed, and in particular they identified Thymoquinone (TQ), which is unique to Black Seed. TQ has subsequently been shown by a large number of peer reviewed studies to be responsible for many of the health promoting characteristics of Black Seed Oil. Its power can be attributed to the presence of a number of pharmacologically active constituents such as thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, dithymoquinone, thymol, nigellone and many other phytochemicals.
Family and is a herb with white flowers that grows to between 16 to 24 inches in height. The deep black, sharp-cornered rectangular seeds (no longer than 3 mm) are the part of the plant that is used for the preparation of our Black Seed products. Gernot Katzer, a culinary spice expert and former researcher at the University of Graz in Austria, has compiled an extensive list of the different names of this remarkable herb and spice in 63 languages. What is interesting is that Katzer notes that nearly all of these names contain an element meaning ‘black’ in reference to the unusually dark colour of the seeds, also having a second part that means ‘cumin’, ‘caraway’ or simply ‘grain’.
